Editor: Philip H. Eveson

The chapters of this book were originally delivered as papers at a symposium on the gospel ministry in the present day at the John Owen Centre for Theological Study, London, England.

Evangelist, pastor, teacher — today’s gospel minister juggles several different roles. As Andrew A. Davies says in his paper, ‘Pastoring the flock of God in today’s world is a challenging business. This is partly because the pastoral office itself is under attack, partly because professionals have taken over pastoral functions, and partly because pastors have to deal with an often-bewildering variety of pastoral difficulties.’ From the biblical foundations of gospel preaching through a historical review of pastoral ministry to a look at ministry in the context of contemporary society, the contributors to this book evaluate the work of gospel ministry, explore in detail the roles of pastor, teacher and evangelist, and conclude with an examination of ministerial training.

Philip Eveson is a Welshman who has studied the biblical languages and theology at the University of Wales, Cambridge and London. He has been the minister of Kensit Evangelical Church for twenty-five years and is now the Principal of the London Theological Seminary, where he has lectured since its inception. Philip Eveson is also the author of The Book of Origins — Genesis simply explained, part of the ever-popular Welwyn Commentary Series.

The Emmaus series is for pastors, teachers and serious students of the Word of God

Books on issues that impact everyday life and ministry.

Series editors: Robert Strivens is Pastor of Banbury Evangelical Free Church. He is Chairman of Evangelical Press and lectures at London Theological Seminary. Dr John D. Currid is Carl McMurray Professor of Old Testament at the Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, USA.

'This book should not be missed by Church leaders, those in front-line, local church ministries and also those involved in the provision and advance of theological training and education.'
