These notes are not intended to be a critical commentary. I do not pretend to explain every verse or deal with every difficulty. What I have done is to divide the Gospel text into sections of about twelve verses each. I have then given a short explanation and selected a few of the most important points for comment. These may be about the teaching or the practical application.
I have tried to be plain and direct in my style. I have imagined someone who is reading aloud to others and needs to catch their attention. I have tried to speak to a mixed company and to be brief. For this reason, I have left out many things which could have been said. I have also concentrated on things that are essential for salvation. Matters of secondary importance have been passed over so that I can say something that may stick in the conscience.
I hope this book will be useful for family devotions. There is always a need for books of this sort. I hope this book will be useful for those who visit people who are housebound or in hospital. There is a need for books that can be used on such occasions.
Lastly, I hope this book will be useful for personal reading alongside the Gospel. There are many who do not have the time or opportunity to read large and detailed books. I believe that such people will find it helpful to have a few main points brought to their attention.
I pray that God may use this book to spread the true Gospel message about Christ and be a modest assistance in the wonderful work of converting and encouraging undying souls.
