Author : Prof Lewis Bevens Schenck

A definitive historical analysis of the Presbyterian doctrine of baptism, and a defense of the historic Presbyterian doctrine against the inroads of revivalism.

“This great book [is] virtually the only major study of the Bible’s doctrine of saving grace at work in the lines of generations. Schenck explains both the present confusion and the way back to a more biblical view of our children and the responsibilities of parents and churches for their spiritual life.” —Robert S. Rayburn

“We heartily recommend this splendid work. Dr. Schenck has rendered us a great service. . . . We hope that through it the Presbyterian Churches may once more acquire a true insight into the real meaning of the covenant and into the significance of infant baptism.” —Louis Berkhof (1940)

Lewis Bevens Schenck (1898–1985) was J. W. Cannon Professor of Bible and Religion at Davidson College, where he taught for thirty-nine years. He earned a Th.M. degree from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from Yale.

Frank James, giving his contribution in the introduction, is a bright young historian of theology at RTS Orlando. He received a doctorate from Oxford University and is currently pursuing a second Ph.D at Westminster Seminary.
