Author : Rev John Legg

The reputation and significance of the Old Testament prophet Elisha often suffers by comparison with the more dramatic figure of Elijah. We are moved and encouraged by the mention of the seven thousand in Israel, ‘whose knees have not bowed down to Baal’, but tend to forget the less confrontational work of Elisha. However, when Elisha is seen in relation to Christ, the picture is transformed.

In this insightful work John Legg shows the prophet in a completely different light: as a forerunner of the Lord Jesus Christ himself. As a result, not only does Elisha take on a more significant role, but the Lord himself also stands before us in new colours. Mr Legg gives a model of how to preach Christ from the Old Testament. As he examines the life and work of the prophet of Israel, he provides many interesting and profitable insights into the nature of the ministry of Christ himself. Consequently, we gain a more detailed understanding of the gospel of God’s grace and the practical illustrations of its application.

The gospel according to Elisha is a full one. It shows the compassion, grace and mercy of God. It demonstrates the power and trustworthiness of the Lord Jesus Christ towards lost and helpless sinners. Those who encountered God through the prophet Elisha found their lives renewed, transformed and enriched. Those who encounter the Saviour himself will not only have their lives transformed but will also be able to enjoy the full benefits of the unsearchable riches of Christ now and for ever.

After ministering for over forty years in North Yorkshire and Shrewsbury, John Legg has retired to Cardiff, South Wales, where he spends his time preaching and writing. He and his wife Beryl have four children and eleven grandchildren. Previously published books include Dear Tom; When we don't understand; Any objections; The church that Christ built; and the Welwyn commentary on Matthew (The King and his kingdom).
